4 Do’s and Don’ts After Implant Placement
June 14, 2018
If you’ve just completed your dental implant placement surgery, congratulations! The hardest part is behind you. Dental implants have a success rate in the high 90s, but you can increase your chances for successful integration by reading this post to learn more about best practices following dental implant placement. Your dentist or oral surgeon will give you specific instructions to follow, but these basics can help to prepare you for what to expect following your procedure.
1 – Do Get Plenty of Rest
Patients who have difficulty healing after treatment often overdo it in the first few days following their implant surgery. Take the time you need to rest and recuperate after your surgical procedure and avoid as much stress and strain as possible.
2 – Do Carefully Follow Your After Care Instructions
The specific directions your dentist or specialist provides you will be created with your unique situation in mind. In order to ensure you make a full recovery, it’s essential that you follow these after care instructions closely, and let your care provider know right away if you’re experiencing any warning signs of implant failure, including:
- Severe pain
- Sensitivity to temperature
- Severe inflammation
- Infection or signs of infection like fever
3 – Don’t Begin Eating Tough Foods Too Soon
For the first two days after your procedure, you should stick entirely to liquids and very soft foods. You can begin to introduce increasingly more difficult to chew foods over the course of the next several days or weeks. Pay attention as you do and discontinue chewing anything that causes you pain.
4 – Don’t Brush Over the Implant Site
You do need to keep the area around the implant placement site clean, but you shouldn’t brush the soft tissue as you might irritate the gums and slow healing. Instead, try not to chew with that part of the mouth. You should use an antimicrobial mouth rinse to remove plaque and bacteria around the treatment site, avoiding infection and ensuring proper healing and shorter recovery times.
